The Galvin tarte tatin competition returns for sixth year

Annual challenge for home bakers to create the perfect tarte tatin is back at Galvin at La Chapelle, with an all-star line-up of judges

For something a bit different to the normal cake baking contests, ambitious amateur cooks may want to flex their patisserie skills by taking up the challenge of perfecting a French classic – the tarte tatin.

A signature dish at the Michelin-starred Galvin La Chapelle, the restaurant are inviting Britain’s best bakers to try their hand at this popular dessert. For those that can nail the perfect crisp pastry, balance of flavours and caramelisation, there are a range of tasty prizes on offer. The top spot with will win the coveted trophy – an engraved traditional tarte tatin dish – as well as a £100 Galvin voucher, Magnum of Galvin Champagne, a cookbook and tarte tatin for life at Galvin La Chapelle. There’s also plenty to play for in second and third place, with vouchers, Champagne and cookbooks up for grabs.

To enter the competition, post an image of your best tarte tatin before 2 June on Twitter or Instagram (tagging @galvin_brothers and @galvinrestaurants respectively) and using the hashtag #GalvinTarteTatin. The 10 best bakers will be announced on 4 June, and invited to bring their tarte tatin to the final at Galvin La Chapelle on 9 June, to be judged by a line-up including food critic Richard Vines, chocolatier William Curley, food writer Victoria Stewart, Galvin at Windows pastry chef Veronica Martinez and Great British Chefs head of marketing Mecca Ibrahim, as well of course Chris and Jeff Galvin themselves.
